The T-shirt-originally a form of undergarment-evolved into outerwear, encompassing both casual undershirt-style tees and more structured, collared versions. There are various theories regarding the origin of the term "T-shirt."

One account suggests that in the 17th century, dockworkers in Annapolis, Maryland, who unloaded shipments of tea, wore these short-sleeved garments; the word "tea" was abbreviated to "T," leading to the name "T-shirt."

A second theory posits that in the 17th century, British sailors were instructed to add short sleeves to their undershirts to cover their underarm hair, which was considered unsightly.

Yet another explanation is that the garment's shape-formed by the sleeves and the torso-resembles the letter "T," hence the name.

In 1913, the U.S. Navy mandated that sailors wear short-sleeved, white, crew-neck undershirts beneath their uniforms-partly to conceal the sailors' thick chest hair.

For men, the T-shirt is a favorite choice for the spring and summer seasons. Especially during the sweltering heat of midsummer, the T-shirt-prized for being natural, comfortable, and stylish, while still maintaining a sense of propriety-has largely replaced the traditional sleeveless undershirts or vests once worn by men. It is estimated that billions of T-shirts are sold annually worldwide; together with jeans, they constitute the most popular and widely worn type of clothing globally.
