1. Tactile Identification
Assess the fabric by touch. Common materials for cargo pants-such as pure cotton, twill, and polyester-cotton blends-have distinct tactile characteristics. Pure cotton is soft and gentle against the skin, developing natural creases when rubbed or crumpled. Twill features a perceptible diagonal weave; it is stiffer and more wear-resistant than pure cotton. Polyester-cotton blends have a slightly smooth, synthetic feel, offering a balance of durability and wrinkle resistance.

2. Burn Test
Perform a simple burn test using a small scrap from an inconspicuous area of the fabric. When burned, pure cotton emits an odor similar to the smell of burning paper and leaves behind a soft, grayish-white ash. Polyester-cotton blends, by contrast, melt and drip when exposed to flame, leaving behind hard, black, bead-like residues. Twill fabrics-depending on whether they are made of pure cotton or a polyester-cotton blend-will exhibit burning characteristics that fall somewhere between these two extremes.

3. Visual and Detail-Based Identification
Examine the fabric's weave and luster. Most standard cargo pant fabrics feature a clear, visible weave; they typically retain a natural texture rather than appearing overly smooth or glossy. Additionally, consider the fabric's "crispness" or structure: high-quality cargo pant material should possess a natural drape. If a fabric appears limp or flimsy, it is generally not the type typically used for cargo pants.
